Toxic Effects of Inhaling Lacquer Fumes on the Body

Inhaling fumes from nail polish (lacquer) and solvents causes a state often mistaken for a "high." In reality, this is acute chemical intoxication of the brain.

1. What Is Actually Happening?

The "intoxication" effect is achieved due to substances such as toluene, formaldehyde, acetone, and butyl acetate. These chemicals:

  • Cause hypoxia (oxygen deprivation) of the brain.

  • Dissolve the myelin sheaths of nerve cells (literally "melting" the nervous system).

  • Depress the central nervous system, causing disorientation and hallucinations.

2. Irreversible Consequences

Short-term:

  • Cerebral and pulmonary edema (brain and lung swelling).

  • Cardiac arrhythmia: Can lead to sudden cardiac arrest (Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome).

  • Loss of consciousness and asphyxiation: Risk of choking on vomit while unconscious.

Long-term (Irreversible):

  • Encephalopathy: Mass death of brain cells, leading to decreased intelligence, memory loss, and personality degradation.

  • Toxic hepatitis: Destruction of the liver.

  • Kidney failure.

  • Bone marrow damage: Risk of developing leukemia (blood cancer).

3. The Myth of Safety

Many mistakenly believe that "household chemicals" are less dangerous than hard drugs. This is false. Solvent abuse (inhalant addiction) destroys internal organs and the psyche faster than many injectable substances, as the poison enters the bloodstream directly through the lungs and reaches the brain instantly.

4. Legal Aspect

In many countries, inducing others to use or distributing information that promotes substance abuse (toxicomania) is an administrative or criminal offense.

If you or someone you know is struggling with the urge to misuse chemical substances, it is strongly recommended to seek help from a psychologist or an addiction specialist.
